When are Rabbits Ready to Mate?
-
Many people are curious about how rabbits mate with each other to produce those cute soft fluffy little baby bunnies. Male rabbits are referred to as bucks and female rabbits are called does. Rabbits are generally mature enough to mate when they are between 5 and 9 months of age. In the wild, rabbits can produce very large litters. Rabbits basically live to breed because they are active breeding nearly all the time.
Responsible Breeding
-
Supervised breeding by reputable breeders should be kept under control to ensure that the breeder can find homes for all the baby bunnies. Most breeders try to breed their rabbits by selecting males and females to be bred with certain traits like hair and eye color. They typically select the most beautiful unblemished rabbits for breeding. Responsible breeders wait until the male and female are mature, and they avoid overbreeding their female rabbits. These breeders also like to make sure that the male and female will get along well enough to mate. They can do this by placing their cages next to each other while they are young or even putting them together a few times prior to breeding. This is a good thing because it helps the rabbits to get acquainted with each other and it may prevent aggressive behavior. The female rabbit needs to be comfortable with the male rabbit before mating can begin. This makes the process much smoother.
The Mating Ritual
-
Before mating can begin and result in a successful pregnancy, the female rabbit needs to go into heat. Most female rabbits go into heat quite often which means that breeding can happen a lot. When a female rabbit goes into heat, there are a few changes that will take place. For instance, her vulva area will become swollen, and she may begin to nest more often. The female rabbit usually stays very still while the male rabbit begins to court her. She may even lay down on her stomach. He sniffs her and continually hops around her. He mounts her several times and the process starts over again. Sometimes she hops away from him and he has to mount her again. The male rabbit will then ejaculate sperm inside the female rabbit. Right after this happens you will hear a loud squeal and the male rabbit will flop over onto the floor. The rabbits will then repeat this process over and over again as long as they are together. She prepares in advance for the arrival of her bunnies while she is pregnant. When the female rabbit is pregnant, she will pluck hair from her chest and place it in her nest to make it warmer for the babies.
