- The beauty and scent of roses make it among the most popular flowers in the world. The rose also comes in an array of colors and varieties, such as climbing roses, rosebushes and rose vines. When someone is interested in growing roses, or even just interested in how roses grow, it is important to know how a rose blooms. This article outlines the process of how a rose seed turns into a beautiful blossom.
- Roses, like any other plant, start from seeds. When the seed is planted and taken care of properly, it will grow into a rose vine or bush. There are many different kinds of roses, but they all bloom the same way. Rose seeds are a lot like apple seeds and have to be planted the fall before the plant sprouts.
- When the bush or vine has grown, buds will form under the right conditions. If conditions are adequate, the plant will concentrate on making greenery rather than producing flower pods. Those necessary conditions differ for each kind of rose. Some need full sun, while others prefer shade. Some new rose plants do not produce blooms for several years after they have been planted.
- The rose buds appear in early spring for most varieties of roses. Rosebushes that bloom several times a year will go through the cycle several times. In many cases, the buds appear before the leaves on the plants. Other times they will appear simultaneously with the new leaves. It can be hard to tell whether a bud is going to be a flower or a new stem of the rose. However, the rosebud usually will have several coatings of a paperlike substance like an onion. As the flower opens, the wrappings are discarded.
- The flowers open over about a week. Usually the blooms occur several at a time. On a large rosebush you could have hundreds of blooms at once. The buds slowly open, shedding their protective coating, and the flower starts to peek out. When the buds are about half open, they are usually ready to be picked.
- Once the roses have bloomed, insects and bees will gather the nectar from the flowers, pollinating them in the process. If a rose has been pollinated, it will leave a kind of pod behind when the flower dies. When this pod has dried all the way, it will fall and break open. Inside are new seeds to continue the growth of the roses. An unpollinated rose will just leave a bare stem when it dies.
