Benzoyl peroxide has long been a favorite for treating acne and has a track record for producing satisfactory results. It can be found in many over-the-counter and prescription acne medications. Acne is caused by the propioni bacteria, which is also known as P. acnes. This bacteria cannot live when exposed to high amounts of oxygen. Benzoyl peroxide works by administering high levels of oxygen onto the skin and in the pores, destroying the bacteria and any dead skin cells that may contribute to the acne. Keeping the pores clean helps to prevent further bacteria from forming and allows for a small appearance of the pores. A noticeable improvement of the skin may take a few weeks to appear but will vary with each individual.

The amount of applications of benzoyl peroxide needed for treatment will vary depending on the strength of the medication and the sensitivity level of the individual's skin. Recommended applications will be on the acne medication's packaging and should be followed unless a reaction to the product occurs. Any side effects that are uncomfortable or become painful should be discussed with a dermatologist before continuing with use. Other acne medications are available if a person is unable to use benzoyl peroxide due to side effects. Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach clothing and other fabrics, so care should be taken during application. Medications should be allowed to thoroughly dry before going to bed for the night.
