- The first part of the estimation process is figuring out the mileage. Using the Internet is the fastest way to estimate trip mileage. Use of Google Maps or MapQuest.com can provide an accurate distance. These sites will also add stops and detours for construction. MapQuest.com offers gas price comparisons to make the estimation process even easier. Major moving companies will charge a set rate for each mile. The rate is based on round trip miles multiplied by average gas cost. Extra stops and larger trucks will affect the estimate greatly.
- After asking the customer how much there will be to move, the movers will estimate the truck space needed. For most families, one truck will suffice. Some companies may offer use of a van for small moves. Size of the truck being used will have to be considered when the mover is planning the route. Not all streets allow large trucks for through traffic. Moving companies and employees are required to know the regulations. Insurance and maintenance costs are included in the truck rental estimate.
- Additional services may be offered by the moving company. Packing and cleaning of the original home are standard extras. Unpacking the move is becoming an amenity for moving companies. There are additional charges for all of these services. The cost of labor will increase with each extra added to the estimate. Boxes and packing materials can be purchased in bulk by the moving company and added to the estimate. Any special insurance a customer would like to purchase may also be added.
- Estimating the cost of labor for a move is a large part of the total bill. Each employee makes an hourly wage, with at least one supervisor making more. If unpacking is ordered at the end of the move, extra labor will be required for round trip. All of the moving company employees must also be insured by Worker's Compensation.
- Miscellaneous costs that a company will add into an estimate include: upkeep of the home office, salaries of office staff, employee benefits and advertising expenses. These costs will play a very small part in the total estimate of the move.
