  1. Water Rescue

    • Lifeguards are responsible for the lives of the area they are working in. Lifeguards can be found at beaches, pools and water parks. Whichever venue the lifeguard is working for, he must have an eye on all of the swimmers at all times. He must be ready to step in at the first sign of trouble. Lifeguards must rescue individuals who begin to drown or become distressed in the water. Lifeguards rescue swimmers by swimming to them and pulling them to shore or by using a rescue boat or jet-ski.

    First Aid

    • Lifeguards are responsible for aiding individuals who get hurt in the area they are patrolling. These injuries may be minor or life-threatening, such as a shark bite. Lifeguards must attempt to save the life of the individual by calling for an ambulance and trying to stop the bleeding. They must keep the patient calm and administer oxygen if necessary.

    Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

    • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a must. Lifeguards cannot be lifeguards unless they pass a CPR course. If an individual drowns before the lifeguard gets to her, the lifeguard must immediately begin CPR. This is the only way the lifeguard can save the individual's life. The lifeguard must also call for an ambulance, which should have a defibrillator that can restart an individual's heart.
