- A heat rash, also called prickly heat, shows up on a persons skin in red or pink bumps. These bumps are uncomfortable and may itch. Babies often get heat rash, but it is not uncommon to see an adult with it.
- Heat rash occurs on a hot or humid day. It is usually found under a person's clothing. This is because the sweat ducts get blocked and they start to swell. You see the swollen sweat ducts when you see the red and pink bumps. Sometimes these bumps can look like pimples. They are not dangerous and should go away within 3 days.
- Any type of rash can become infected, which would require immediate medical attention. You do not want an infection to run through your body. Consult your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms: fever, pain, swelling, pus, red streaks, and most importantly swollen lymph nodes. An infection requires an antibiotic.
- Heat rash can be prevented simply by wearing appropriate clothing. Don't overdress your baby. That is the most common way heat rash occurs. Wear loose fitting clothing that is made for hot days. Breathable fabrics help. Stay indoors in the air conditioning on extreme summer temperature days when possible.
