- Although the mechanics behind HD radios are certainly similar to that in traditional analog radio systems, it is the quality of the sound that is different. In HD radio, FM radio sounds as good as a CD player, while AM radio is upgraded to FM-quality in a traditional radio. No static, crackling or fading is present. Additionally, more transmission of information is possible, as are many luxury features that make the radio more of an interactive listening station than an old-fashioned radio.

- One irritation that users of traditional radios have is the fact that the signal is often obstructed or it comes through crackly and fading in and out. HD digital radio signals are designed to reduce static noises and hisses by compensating for the reflected signals. This results in a clearer transmission and much less irritation on the part of the listener.
- The process of sending and receiving an HD radio transmission is as follows: the information is sent in analog and digital form, then the digital part is compressed, followed by the sorting process, and then finally the HD radio receives the signal. This happens almost instantaneously, as is the case with traditional radio. No subscription fee exists with HD radio, as opposed to satellite radio. The only associated increase in cost is in the HD receiver.

Rather than trying to decipher a transmission filled with static or being puzzled over which song you just heard, you could have a clear signal with song titles and artist information at your fingertips.
