As my kids get older, I find that the traditional funny-faced pumpkins are not quite what they are looking for anymore. We started the adventure of carving pumpkins this year knowing all of them will be a little fancier this year.

A little help cleaning out the pumpkin makes the job go quicker.
Special tools for cleaning the inside of the pumpkin makes the job easier.
Use toothpicks to hold the template in place.
Toothpicks work well if your pumpkin is not thick-skinned. Otherwise nails work good. Follow the outline of the template and poke holes about every 1/4 inch to mark where to cut.
After the holes are made for the whole template, remove the template.
A little flour will make following the pattern easier.
Rub a coat of flour over the holes in the pumpkin. This will allow you to see where to carve.
Sharp and safe tools makes carving safer and easier.
The final product looks even cuter than the template!
