How veryirie Did This - How to Make a T-Shirt Quilt

Several years back I decided to offer my sewing skills on Ebay to make custom t-shirt quilts for clients who would email their t-shirts to me and a few weeks later, I'd send back a completed t-shirt quilt.

There is no need to pay anyone to make a t-shirt quilt when you can easily do it yourself. Only basic sewing skills are...

required and you can literally learn as you go. Here are a few tricks I've learned.....

  • Select two to three favorite t-shirts and fasten a safety pin to the center of each to keep them identified. These blocks will be sewn front and center during construction of the quilt.
  • Let size of graphics on t-shirts decide size of blocks.
  • Use an old quilted mattress pad for backing instead of batting.
  • Button-up shirts with embroidered names on front are an excellent choice for a t-shirt quilt block.
  • Use parts of one t-shirt as an applique on another.
  • Highlight graphics by hand stitching with embroidery thread through 3 layers - t-shirt, fusible interfacing and the quilted mattress pad.
  • A solid sheet can be used for backing. Purchase quilt-binding for edges and miter corners for a neat finish.
