Paula K. Parker on How to Deep-Condition Hair

I like to think of deep conditioning my hair as a facial for my tresses; it leaves them healthier and protected against the heat from blow dryers and curling iron. Since I color my hair about once a month, I apply deep conditioning treatments several times a month.

class="c1">  I have a deep conditioning pack that I use once a week in place of my regular conditioner. I apply this condition in the shower. After lathering my hair twice, I apply enough product to cover my hair and ‘comb’ it through with my fingers. I let the deep condition set while I shave and use my body soap. Then I rinse out the conditioner.

I try to have a ‘spa night’ once a month, especially if I am getting ready for a special event. This includes not only doing my nails and applying a facial mask, but also deep conditioning my hair.

I have heard of some women using mayonnaise as a deep conditioning treatment for their hair. I always thought it sounded gross, but when I considered that mayo is basically oil and egg-which is the basis for many at home beauty treatments-I could see their point. Because my hair is oily and doesn’t need extreme moisturizing, I use the same conditioning pack that I apply once a week, but in a different way. I use a heated towel for this conditioning. I heat the towel in one of two ways; I can put the towel on a baking sheet in a 250 degree oven while I shampoo my hair. Or I can wait and heat it in the microwave after I apply the deep conditioning pack.

Just like the weekly conditioning, I shampoo my hair twice in the sink and then towel dry it. I apply the conditioning pack to my hair and cover it with a plastic shower cap. Because I travel with my job, I collect the disposable shower caps from the hotels and bring them home. If I am out of these shower caps, I also use a plastic vegetable bag from the grocery store, although I don’t use the ones that had onions in them. I slip the bag over my hair and twist one corner to make sure it is secured against my hair.

If the towel is to be heated in the microwave, I place the towel on a plate and put it in the microwave. I start by heating it one minute and then check the towel. It needs to be very warm, but not hot; if it’s not, I reheat it. I made the mistake several years ago of just zapping it in the microwave for 5 minutes; holes were burned in the towel. I’m lucky it didn’t catch the towel on fire. I wrap the towel around the plastic shower cap (or vegetable bag) and set a timer for 20 minutes.

During that time, I will either put on a facial mask or trim my nails and massage cream into my cuticles. If I’m getting ready to go out, I’ll place a chilled mask on my eyes and lay down for a quick nap while the deep conditioning pack works on my hair. I have also used this time to relax in a warm scented bath.

Once the timer goes off, I wash off any facial mask first and then remove the towel and plastic bag from my hair. I rinse the deep conditioner out of my hair with warm water, until it no longer feels slick.
