rubicon on How to Sell Books on Amazon

While I was browsing the eHow website for different ways to make some extra money, this eHow caught my eye. I remembered vaguely, that my sister had once mentioned selling her used books on Amazon, but neither one of us had actually followed...

through. Furthermore, I usually gave my used books away to goodwill or Salvation Army. With the economy heading downhill, however, I figured this was as good a time as any to give the eHow a try and earn some much needed income from my book collection. Here’s how I did it:

Getting an Account

First things first – I opened a new Amazon account. Although I already have a personal account, I prefer to have a separate account specifically for selling my books.

To open the account, I went to the Amazon website and clicked on the sign-in link in the menu at the top of the home page. This took me to the sign-in page.

I typed in my email address and checked the option labeled: No, I am a new customer. I clicked on the button labeled: Sign in Using Our Secure Server

On the next screen, I set up my new account by filling in all the information, including a password of my choice, and clicking on the button: Create a New Account.

Once the account was open, I clicked on “My Account” on the right-hand side of the upper toolbar. This took me to a page with several links for managing my account.

Following the steps in the eHow, I provided my billing information, which included registering a credit card, as well as providing a phone number, which would be used in the registration process. I assume that, like eBay, Amazon requires a credit card as a means for minimizing fraud, going so far as to verify the information with the credit card company. After confirming my information, Amazon sent me an email confirmation that my account was set up.

Posting my Books for Sale

I clicked on the link on the right hand side of the page, labeled: Sell Your Stuff. On the next screen, I entered the author’s name – David Baldacci. This took me to a screen listing books written by this author. If I wanted to, I could alternatively have searched for the book using its ISBN.

Clicking on the button labeled: Sell Yours Here launched an easy-to-follow wizard. First, it took me to a confirmation page to verify that that was the book I wanted to sell. I also selected the books condition from a drop-down menu – in this case, the book was: “Used, like new.    For additional comments, I indicated that it has a single, two-inch scratch on the front cover.

On the next screen, I provided a price, quantity and location. For shipping, I selected the “standard” option. If I had wanted to ship internationally or offer expedited shipping I could have selected one or both of the other two options.

After completing the wizard, my book was posted and available for sale to the millions of buyers on the Amazon marketplace. Yay!
