eggleston on How to Shave Your Face

In my goal to be a more honest person in my life, I can tell you straight out that I hate shaving. Really. With a passion. I'd grow a 4-foot-long beard if I could, trimming it only when I absolutely had to and foraging through it to remove the birds and rats that nested there.

Alas, my fiancée and my...

daughter have other ideas about what I should look like and, they say, having a full out beard is not the way to go. I guess it's too mountain man or survivalist for them.

I do sport a goatee, which I've had since I was 18 (with the exception of twice), and every now and again I manage to get a few days of growth on the old mandibles and cheeks before there's a comment made during a kiss or a hug.

My usual method of shaving is one that involves an electric razor, helping me avoid all the truly clean shaves I could be obtaining through the use of some shaving cream and a disposable. This, normally, means that by mid-afternoon I am showcasing a shadow of epic proportions. Not a big deal, really, since I work at home and don't have to see anyone if I don't want to.

This morning, however, I decided to try the old razor-and-cream trick. The reason is simple, actually: I'm meeting up with my mom and my dad for dinner, and I wanted to still look respectable at the end of the day instead of like I was coming off of an all-night binge-drinking tour of my town's bars (of which there are more than plenty of).

I fired up the old computer, checking to see if there were any breakthroughs since I last shaved, and came across this article. I gave it a read and followed the directions. I took the time to wash my face thoroughly with soap and water, and then I held a hot washcloth over the lower half of my face for several minutes. I lathered up my face with shaving cream. I've never really been sure “how much” to use, so I spread it evenly across my face as best as possible. Using a new razor, I shaved downward from my cheeks to my jaw and then upward from my throat back to my jaw. I skipped the part about shaving my upper lip, as I think that would scare everyone involved (I haven't seen myself without a mustache but twice since college, and my fiancée and daughter have each only been witness to it once).

I took the time to completely cool off my face with cold water afterward, which is something I've always neglected to do in the past, and found it refreshing and soothing after all the scraping and cutting. It was a nice addition to this article, that's for certain.

In the end, I found a couple of things I wasn't honestly aware of and implemented them into my shaving routine—well, not that I plan on keeping a very steadfast routine if I can get away with it.
