Mimzy on How to Wear a Scarf in Five Different Styles

Scarves are such versatile accessories. You can actually create several different looks with the same scarf. Here are some of the ways I enjoy wearing scarves, for business and pleasure. The five different styles listed here work best with a scarf that’s no more than 4 inches...

wide. Most of these styles can be worn as part of an outfit or as outerwear.

Fold your scarf in half and place it around your neck and over your shoulders. Take both ends of the scarf and insert them through the loop created at the halfway point. Pull the ends through as much or as little as you’d like. Place the loop in the front, centered between your shoulders or to the right or left for a slightly different look.

Drape the scarf around your neck so that the ends hang down evenly in the front. Secure both ends together with a safety pin placed unobtrusively between the two pieces of fabric. Hold both ends together, and begin twisting the scarf until you have a spiral that reaches your collarbone. Secure the top of the twist with a broach or a large hair clip.

Spread the scarf in a straight line, and tie a knot about 3 inches from each end. Tie another knot about 3 inches from the first, moving towards the center of the scarf. Do this on both ends. Repeat the process two more times, each one about 3 inches apart. You should have four knots evenly spaced on both ends of the scarf. Loop the scarf in a loose tie over one shoulder, letting the knots fall in the front and the back.

Drape the scarf around your neck so that both ends fall evenly in the front. Make a loose tie that lands about 3 inches below your collarbone. Flatten the center of the tie, and attach the scarf to your shirt or coat with a broach. Make another loose tie that falls close to the end of your scarf. Flatten the tie, and attach the scarf to your clothing with another broach.

You can also thread a thin scarf through the belt loops of your jeans, or tie a square silk scarf like a sash around the waistband of your skirt. Pull one corner of the silk scarf down over one hip, adding color and design to a simple skirt.

You can create even more styles with a square silk scarf. For instance, try a bandanna style with a knot in the front and the scarf draping down your back or over your shoulder. Turn the bandanna style around and have the scarf drape in the front or tucked into your blouse. I like pairing vintage jewelry with any kind of scarf for a little flash and to secure the scarf in place. Any kind of pin will work, seen or unseen, or you can use a hair clip or pierced earrings to keep the scarf knotted or tied as you like it. Old rhinestone rings make great scarf rings if you need a simple loose-fitting accessory.
