The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks. Situated in the city center next to the Parliament and the Holocaust Memorial, it was commissioned as a city gate by King Frederick William II of Prussia in the late eighteenth century and has since then witnessed a variety of decisive political moments in European history. Today the gate is closed to traffic and exists as a major tourist spot. Several hotels are situated within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate.
