There’s no doubt that horses make excellent partners due to their willingness, athleticism and intelligence. While working with these magnificent creatures, the pleasure is in the day to day activities and time spent with your friend - no matter the riding goal.

I think that my first word was "horse." By the age of five, my father gave in and I became the proud owner of an old, flea bitten gelding. My mother added the fuel that stoked the fire, however, when she took me to the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show. I was enchanted by all the horses but dreamed of jumping. Soon after, I began taking English riding lessons. Today I own a wonderful gelding. He’s a marvelous hunter - perfect for the amateur owner! | hide

RFD-TV hosted a show on the Gypsy Vanner breed this week. The horses were brought to the United States in the mid-1990's by enthusiasts who discovered the breed in the United Kingdom.

Called Gypsy Cob or Coloured Cobs in the UK, the horses were re-named once they landed on American soil. A breed registry organization, Gypsy Vanner Horse Society, was established in 1996. The horses are brown and white, with long feathers around their fetlocks. The breed distinguishes between mini and standard sizes. The horses can be used for a variety of disciplines and are gaining in popularity. Orginally, Gypsy Vanners were bred to pull gypsy vans, hence the name. They are thought to be a mix of several types horses and ponies.

The United States Hunter Jumper Association High Performance Hunter Committee did something new this year: A Hunter Derby was created. Years ago, hunter courses included natural fences and galloping lines, but in recent times, the magic of pseudo fox hunting has been lost.

Show hunters are known for their manners and performance on course. Any displays of freshness is counted down by judges. The Hunter Derby 2009 was won by a horse who not only jumped at peak performance, but displayed signs of exuberance and joy as he galloped round the course. Rumba, with John French aboard, aced the competition.

Practial Horseman's November 2009 issue has a lovely feature on the event, as well as Rumba's talent and French's skills. For more information, browse to PracticalHorsemanMag.com.

Clinton Anderson talks about keeping a horse out of your personal space, and he calls this "establishing a hula hoop." What this means is the horse must stay out of a range that is at least arm's distance. Trainers and riders alike must opt to teach horses about this as it is a safety issue.

When a horse readily comes close to you, he is ignoring your leadership and is also setting the stage for an accident. Should the animal spook or decide to kick or strike out, you are in harm's way. Anderson is a renowed equine trainer and natural horseman who knows his stuff. One of Anderson's most frequent mantras is to keep the horse a minimum of arm's distance away.
