Teams from Rutgers and Princeton universities played the first public game of North American Football on Nov. 6, 1869. The game was adapted from both rugby and association football (aka soccer). The first professional league wasn't formed until 1903, and the NFL (National Football League) didn't exist until 1920. By 1960, football had become a national phenomenon, and to this day, populates an essential niche in the collective "mind" of American culture.

The University of Arkansas Cardinals morphed into the mighty Arkansas Razorbacks football team in 1909 after a 16-0 victory over rival Louisiana State University. The Rose Bowl finalized its construction in 1922 in Pasadena, California and since has hosted numerous Rose Bowl football games, as well as other major sporting events. Prior to its construction, the Tournament of Roses Association held Rose Bowl games in Tournament Park. Seating capacity inside the horseshoe shaped stadium has increased over the years to fit more than 90,000 people. The Rose Bowl was first televised in 1947 and continues to be televised around the world to this day.
