The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is managed through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HHS provides training materials through its website designed to help the public understand the background and purpose of HIPAA.
In 1996 Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to improve the health care system. This act required Health and Human Services (HHS) to create a national standard in regards to health care codes, transitions and security. All states within the United States are required to follow these regulations.
HIPPA is the acronym for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act which governs how medical, health files are stored and transported electronically. HIPPA is the standard for privacy and security of patients and their health records. HIPPA is a federal legislation and those who work with health records in a hospital, research center and other medical facilities are required to receive training.
Anybody who provides patient care or patient referrals is subject to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act. This federal law provides standards on keeping patient information private. Stiff penalties are imposed on those who violate this law. Training is a requirement for employees who work in the health care industry. This training ensures that patient information is kept confidential and secure as required by law.
