This week reports from a 20-year study showed that monkeys who ate a reduced-calorie diet experienced longer life and a reduced risk of dying from disease. Monkeys on a reduced-calorie plan were three times less likely to develop age-related diseases such as heart disease and had more brain volume, suggesting that calorie restriction can slow the aging process.
In the study one group of monkeys was allowed to eat freely while the other group was placed on a restricted eating plan requiring them to consume 30% fewer calories than they normally would. Scientists believe that, while not studied in humans, the results are seen in a primate species and could apply to humans.

hideFruits and Vegetable Intake by Pregnant Women on 11/8/2009
If you are pregnant and concerned about getting a cold then up your fruit and vegetable intake.... more
If you are pregnant and concerned about getting a cold then up your fruit and vegetable intake. A study from Boston University School of Medicine found that pregnant women who ate seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day moderately reduced their risk for contracting the common cold or developing a sinus infection. These ailments are classified as upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and can lead lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
The recommendation for fruit and vegetable intake had previously been set at five, but this study shows that more may be better for immunity when pregnant. Researches feel this likely has to do with the extra demands placed on the body during pregnancy.
