Grip Shift, made by bicycle company SRAM, uses a cylindrical shifter nestled next to the bicycle's handlebar grips. Like any shifter, Grip Shifts are attached to the derailleur cables; when the shifter is turned, the cable gains or loses tension and the derailleur shifts the chain. Almost all problems with the Grip Shift arise at the cable. A basic repair consists or either lubricating or replacing the cable running into the Grip Shift.
The Catrike is a brand of recumbent bicycle trike. As its name implies, the Catrike has three wheels, one at the rear and two at the front. Unlike a standard bicycle, the Catrike is placed low to the ground and allows the rider enjoy a reclined position. Pedals are located forward of the machine and gear, and brake levers are accessible to the hands. With a little know-how and practice, riding a recumbent bicycle can be an enjoyable and healthful experience.
A grip shift is a type of bicycle gear shifter. The grip shift is used on flat, mountain bike-style handlebars and works by gripping the side of the shifter and twisting it forward or backward to the desired gear. The grip shift relies on a cable to actuate the derailleur -- the device that directly guides the chain to the selected gear. The cable is replaced if damaged or worn.
Like much else, bicycle shifters have become increasingly user friendly. At one time shifters were mounted on the down tube of the bicycle frame---a design that required the cyclist to remove a hand from the handlebar to execute a shift. Satisfying the need for an easier and safer design, shifters were relocated to points on the handlebar. Featured on mountain and hybrid-style bicycles, grip shifters are one such design.
Learning the basics of operating an all-terrain vehicle or four-wheeler is essential to understanding the safety measures that must be taken to maneuver through wooded and rough terrain. Basic functions like operating the clutch and properly shifting the vehicle can mean the difference between successfully navigating an obstacle or being thrown from the four-wheeler. Proper clutch usage will ensure the drivetrain has slack at the right time and that the four-wheeler stays on all four wheels.
Grip Shift and other handlebar "twist" shifters are known for their shift accuracy, ease of adjustment and ergonomic controls. Because the shifters themselves spin around the handlebar, it is not necessary to move your hands into uncomfortable positions, or off of the handlebar entirely, to shift gears. Get the most out of your bicycle's drivetrain by learning how to shift your Grip Shift shifters.
