The Harlem Renaissance movement began during the 1920s and continued through the 1930s. The movement ushered in new styles of music, new forms of poetry, a wealth of literature and new philosophical ideas pertaining to the specific issues that African Americans faced in early 20th century America. Of these changes, the music of the Harlem Renaissance helped shape American culture, while adding its own elements to the American music tradition.
