Many states now require the electronic delivery of these assistance funds. Virginia uses an electronic benefit transfer system to distribute food benefits to Virginia residents in need.
For low- to moderate-income residents of Kansas, assistance may be available to help purchase food, medical services and other necessities. Applying for any of the available assistance programs can be done online or in person.
A number of resources in Kansas offer food assistance. Many families struggle to make ends meet, and sometimes government assistance is necessary to survive. In the state of Kansas, you can apply for medical, cash and food assistance if you are unemployed, have children, are disabled or are an elderly citizen in need. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, or SNAP, is a federal program that each state, including Kansas, participates in to help low-income people pay for groceries. In Kansas, the income limit to receive food stamps is $1526 for a family of three, as of December 2010. Even though the the government issues SNAP benefits with a debit-like card called an electric benefits transfer card, or EBT, many people refer to them as food stamps. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services runs the food stamp program and allows people to fill out a food stamp application online.

In Kansas, food stamp benefits are provided by the Food Assistance Program, which provides healthy groceries to low-income families, households and individuals. Federally funded by SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Food Assistance Program eschews paper stamps in favor of Vision debit cards that are preloaded monthly with benefits and can be swiped at participating grocery stores and farmers' markets.
Kansas uses the "Vision card" to distribute food assistance benefits. The Vision card looks and works like a debit card. Assistance benefits are added to a recipient's account each month and subtracted from the account when the recipient swipes the card at grocery stores. According to the University Daily Kansan, the maximum benefit amount for food stamps for a family of three is $526 per month (as of 2010). Applicants must apply for food stamps through the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services.
The state of Florida and public organizations offer assistance to families who need help purchasing food. The state-run food assistance programs include Access Florida Program--which also offers temporary cash assistance and healthcare assistance--and Suncap, a program designed for people receiving Supplemental Security Income. Many private organizations such as churches and charities offer options for purchasing food or operate food pantries.
Almost every community has one or more food banks available to help needy families who do not have enough food to last until their next payday. Food banks usually provide staples such as dried beans, rice, pasta, canned vegetables, canned meats and nonperishable food items such as peanut butter, boxed potatoes and pasta. Some food banks may also provide frozen meats and bread.

The Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Eligible applicants receive food assistance benefits, which are automatically transferred to an electronic card, called the Illinois link card. Your first step in applying for food assistance is submitting a SNAP application to your nearest DHS office. Expect an interview after the office processes your application. The DHS determines your eligibility based on your total household income, how many people live in your household and whether any household member is disabled or elderly.
