Composite Deck Board Problems
Composite decking embodies the new boom in green building products. Made from recycled plastics and wood fibers, composite boards are claimed to be sturdier and stronger than traditional wooden deck material. Before choosing this option, however, it is necessary to review the general pros and cons. Although composite decking may be the perfect choice for "going green," it may not be good for those wanting a maintenance-free product with longevity. Does this Spark an idea?

Mold

A composite board is constructed of dense, reclaimed material. When used as decking, its tendency is to hold moisture in the wood fibers for long periods of time. With exposure to the sun, black mold spots can form in the saturated areas. Watered-down bleach will remove most of the spots, however, the only way to deter mold from growing is to seal your boards with a water-repellent product.
Color Fade and Staining

The surface of composite decks is prone to UV fading and staining. Wine, barbeque sauce and oil can all penetrate the surface and cause unsightly scars. A deck sealer will protect composite decking from damage due to sunlight or spills, however, it must be reapplied annually. Decking made from vinyl is a better choice, as it harbors more stain and fade-resistant qualities.

Composite boards experience degeneration due to oxidation of the board's surface area. When the summer heat rises, the boards "sweat" off their oils, allowing them to become brittle. After many seasons, surface flaking and peeling will happen. In this instance, the only option is board replacement since composite decking cannot be re-sanded and stained.
Scratching

If your household contains furry family members, composite decking is not the best alternative. Because of its soft surface, the boards are easily scratched by dog claws or a frisky cat. The scratches will leave ridges and valleys that are prone to collecting dirt and stains, creating a problem remedied only by complete board replacement.
