Planting Near Electricity

Planting Near Electricity thumbnail
Improperly placed trees can interfere with electrical service.

When planting near electricity, exercise caution. Some trees and shrubs are fully compatible with electric and other utilities, while other plantings should be avoided. Consult with a nursery professional if in doubt. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Overhead Electric Lines

    • When planting near overhead electric lines, select trees based on their mature size. Trees near electricity should not exceed 25 feet in height at maturity. Ornamental trees such as dogwood, crabapple and cherry trees are suitable for placement near overhead lines.

    Underground Electric Lines

    • Trees and shrubs should not be planted closer than 12 feet to any underground electrical lines. The depth of underground lines can vary greatly, and planting guidelines differ as well. Select shallow-rooted plants when planting near underground utilities.
