Types
-
There are many styles and designs of shakers but really only two types -- the cobbler shaker and the Boston shaker. The cobbler has three parts, the base, lid and strainer, while the Boston shaker is two separate tumblers, usually glass and stainless steel. Neither design is foolproof and both can leak.
Cobbler Shaker
-
The cobbler shaker can leak if the lid is not snug enough. If the strainer holes on your cobbler shaker are too small, liquid may pool at the top of the holes causing the shaker to leak once the cap is removed.

Boston Shaker
-
Boston shakers are common among bartenders who know exactly how to handle one. But even among professionals this style can still leak; the metal tumbler is inverted into the glass tumbler; if the seal between the two is not secure enough it will leak. Using two hands often resolves the leaking problem.
