Dog Barking Control with Citronella
Citronella is an essential plant oil that is commonly used as a bug repellent. The oil of the citronella plant is used in candles, bug sprays and soaps, and has an extremely strong, citrus-like smell. Citronella is also used to control barking in dogs. Does this Spark an idea?

Function
-
Citronella dog collars are designed to sense the vibration a canine's throat makes when it barks. When the dog barks, the citronella collar sprays diluted citronella oil in front of the dog. The strong smell is a deterrent that discourages the dog from barking.
Alternatives
-
The citronella dog collar is an alternative to the shock collar and vocal cord removal surgery, which are considered painful, unnecessary and inhumane by some. Instead, the citronella odor is used and marketed as an all-natural method to control barking.
-
Other Deterrents
-
A dog's sense of smell is extremely sensitive, so the smell of the citronella oil is an unpleasant one to the dog. The citronella collar also deters barking by surprising the dog suddenly with its quick spraying action, the sight and sound of which catch the dog off-guard.
Safety
-
Citronella used in dog collars is diluted to 10 percent, which is considered safe and harmless to dogs and humans. It can irritate dogs with sensitive skin or with respiratory problems, and if a dog begins to experience aggravated allergies or labored breathing, owners should discontinue using citronella control.
