Building Tandem Axle Trailers
A tandem axle trailer moves both wheels at the same time. It is often used to move boats or is attached to a flat bed. The trailer sometimes has two wheels; those with four wheels can carry more weight.

Customizing
-
The axle connects the wheels. Though self-built trailers can include what could be costly upgrades, customizing your own can offer years of productive use. Adding storage for ramps or tool boxes can add value to your project. A local trailer supply store can guide you through the minimum requirements.
Axle Selection
-
Tandem axle trailers are used as boat trailers because they reverse with ease. Start with an axle package that is rated for the towing you plan to do. Junkyards, recreational vehicle repair shops or local welding shops are a good place to start shopping. Axles are very heavy and made of steel, so a wench or dolly will be needed to transport the parts.

Safety
-
When reversing, have someone behind the trailer giving you direction. Always have working brake lights and turn signals on the trailer. A properly fitting hitch and safety chains will help ensure you get to your destination. Visually inspect the trailer before each use and check the tire air pressure. This will help with gas mileage as well. Having a balanced load will help with the vehicle's horsepower. If you are not a welder, have someone certified to weld your bed to the axle.
