Information on Bose Speakers in a 1999 E320
The 1999 Mercedes E320 came with an optional Bose sound system, which was cutting edge at the time. There has been some confusion regarding the specifics of the system. Here are some of the basics about the Bose sound system.
-
Number of Speakers
-
Most people make the mistake of assuming the E320 has eight speakers. This is understandable as a visual count does yield two speakers at the bottom of the front door, two near the top of the front door windows, two on the rear doors and two sub-woofers on the rear deck. Upon closer inspection, however, the front bottom speaker casings actually hold four speakers apiece, for a grand total of 10 speakers.
Tweeters vs. Woofers
-
The four speakers on the front doors are actually divided between woofers and tweeters. To be exact, the speaker casings house two 6.5-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters. The tweeters supply the ambient sound to any given audio track, so if you hear a great deal of hissing or popping between songs, you may want to have your tweeters replaced.

Not the Best
-
Despite its reputation for being a world-class speaker system, a number of E320 drivers prefer to install more dynamic audio systems and speakers. The common criticism is that the Bose speakers are susceptible to crackling, popping and hissing. The more popular alternative brands tend to be JL, Alpine, Harmon-Kardon and Dynaudio.
