What Is Ridgeway Intranet Mail Server?
A Ridgeway intranet mail server collects and delivers in-bound and out-bound email within a specific company's intranet system. As opposed to Internet mail, intranet mail servers only route mail within a closed information matrix, that is, from one employee to another.

The Intranet
-
The intranet, not to be confused with the Internet, is any closed information system working from dedicated, privately owned or contracted servers. A respective intranet system provides a company with more security and adds a layer of protection from hackers or cyber-criminals, who do not have direct access to the company's servers.
Intranet Servers
-
Intranet servers, like the servers once maintained by Ridgeway, can either be installed on-site or housed in secure facilities off-site. These servers are mainframes that route and re-route emails issued to and from employees of the same company. Rather than send an email out onto the Internet, which millions of users have access to, an Intranet server simply routes the email from one employee to the next without ever using Internet protocols.
