Do Mod Chips Work on Carb Vehicles?

Do Mod Chips Work on Carb Vehicles? thumbnail
Carbureted engines do not typically allow the use of modification chips.

Most modern cars made after 1980 use computer-controlled fuel-injected engines, rather than mechanical carburetor-assisted engines. Newer vehicle technology allows engine parameter adjustments through modification chips; however, these chips are not normally used for carburetor engines.

  1. Function

    • A modification, or performance, chip attaches to the engine's on board computer through the diagnostics wiring harness.

    Features

    • Carburetors have mechanical adjustments available on their housing assembly for performance enhancement. Since a modification chip works with a computer-based controller, a carburetor cannot be adjusted with a chip.

    Considerations

    • Alternative devices may be used to make power adjustments to carburetor vehicles. A module, such as a voltage adjuster, may be connected to a car's battery to divert small amounts of electricity to other components.
