What are Automotive Rubber Glazing Installation Tools?

Automotive glass has a surrounding black rubber gasket, or glazing, that seals the glass to the vehicle's metal framing. The black rubber requires specific installation tools for proper attachment to the bare glass panel.

  1. Types

    • In general, installation tools include hooks and locking strip tools. However, some car manufacturers use tools designed for specific vehicle makes and models. Make sure the vehicle make is compatible with the required installation tool.

    Tool Uses

    • The hook tool has many uses, including cleaning glass shards from a rubber glazing and helping mount the glass. The hook shape extends the reach of an installer's fingers to maneuver the tight rubber around the glass edge. The locking strip tool has an oval-shaped end; installers use this tool to spread the rubber glazing for insertion of the locking strip.

    Significance

    • Installing rubber glazing around a glass panel gives the glass stability in the automotive frame and provides vibration dampening from the movement of the car. The glass can become damaged if the surrounding rubber is improperly mounted without installation tools.
