Automation within production facilities gives companies the ability to move manufactured items quickly for packaging and distribution. A low voltage motor control center provides a compact and centralized area for managing the product flow, but does not require special guidelines.

  1. Identification

    • A motor control center is a large cabinet, housing multiple low voltage motors on separate shelves. These motors control automated systems in a manufacturing business. The grouping of the motors together gives workers a fast way to access all motors at the same time, in case of a power disruption.

    Guidelines

    • Guidelines are necessary for the prevention of electrical shocks or arc flashes at, or near, the low voltage motor control center. The connection points for the individually housed motors on the external bus should be insulated. Additionally, a testing area for verifying voltage of the motors within the center should be placed away from the cabinet.

    Considerations

    • All motors within the center need proper electrical grounding and strong door locks to ensure the safety of employees.
