Do Fluidmaster Valves Ever Go Bad?

Do Fluidmaster Valves Ever Go Bad? thumbnail
A bad toilet valve wastes water.

Fluidmaster manufactures a wide variety of residential and commercial plumbing products. The Fluidmaster line of toilet valves is particularly common in residential applications. Although the valves are relatively simple and provide long, trouble-free service, they can develop problems. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Normal Operation

    • A toilet valve is connected to the water supply line. The valve controls the water level in the toilet tank. When you flush the toilet, water flows out of the tank, into the toilet bowl and down the drain. As the water level in the tank drops, a float connected to the toilet valve drops with it, opening the valve. Once the flush cycle is complete, the toilet flapper falls into place, blocking the tank outlet. The water level then rises in the tank to a preset level, at which point the float causes the toilet valve to close.

    Common Problems

    • The most common problems affecting toilet valves are rust or other debris interfering with the valve, and improper float adjustment. Valves that have been in service for a long time are prone to corrosion of internal rubber and metal parts caused by hard water deposits. The valve seals may also soften and swell. Occasionally, the steel pin that lifts the rubber portion of the valve away from the valve seat will either rust through and break, or become detached from the rubber valve. Float leaks are rare on modern valves.

    Considerations

    • Following the troubleshooting and cleaning procedure for a Fluidmaster valve will often cure most common problems by clearing the valve of rust, debris and light corrosion. In the case of swollen seals, heavier corrosion or breakage, the cap and seal are replaceable on most Fluidmaster models. The entire toilet valve assembly is also readily available and simple to replace.
