An earthquake can happen at any time, without warning.

In the event of an earthquake, you should take certain steps. Safety protocol following an earthquake includes actions before, during and after an earthquake. Knowing what to do before an earthquake strikes can save your life and your family. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Before

    • Have a plan in the event of an earthquake. Such a plan includes checking for hazards in your home, identifying places of safety, educating yourself and others, putting aside disaster supplies and creating a plan for communication if an earthquake occurs.

    During

    • When an earthquake strikes, safety recommendations are to drop, cover and hold on if you are inside. Do not run outside or use an elevator. If you are in a car, stop as quickly as you are able to. If possible, do not park near or under bridges, overpasses, buildings, trees or utility wires. If you are outside, move away from large structures, trees and utility wires.

    After

    • Be ready for aftershocks, and check for injuries and damage to your home. Check for gas leaks, and clean up spills that could be hazardous. Unless it is an emergency, do not use the phone. A battery-operated radio can provide instructions from emergency agencies.
