Problems With Grape Seeds

Growing grapes from seed can be a difficult task.

Propagating grapes from seed is difficult but not impossible. Grape seeds require specific conditions to germinate and do not grow true to form from seed. For these reasons, it is not recommended.

Seed Selection

Proper seed selection is crucial for successful germination.

Proper selection of grape seeds is critical to successful seed propagation. The seeds chosen must be fully ripe and the larger the better. Avoid fully developed seeds, though, as these will likely not germinate.

Storage Requirements

Grape seeds require cold storage for good germination.

Grape seeds require a process known as stratification. This requires cold storage at about 40 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately three months before planting. These seeds should be treated with a fungicide, applied to them prior to storage.

Site Selection

Sowing your grape seeds in the right type of soil will improve germination.

As soon as it is practical to plant in your climate, prepare the seed bed. Grape seeds will germinate in light, nutrient-rich soil. They also develop better in partial shade.
