Straight Pipe Vs. Muffler

Straight pipe and mufflers are types of equipment used on motorcycles to release exhaust gases produced by the engine of the vehicle. Mufflers are installed by manufacturers and can be altered with aftermarket options; straight pipe exhaust systems are aftermarket options.

  1. Use

    • Straight pipe exhaust systems run the length of the engine system with a consistent diameter used to bypass any factory-installed muffler system. A muffler is used to reduce the noise and emissions produced by high pressure exhaust emissions from an engine.

    Guidelines

    • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) produces regulations on the emissions and noise created by factory-produced motorcycle exhaust systems; mufflers manufactured for factory-produced motorcycles meet EPA standards. Straight pipe exhaust systems are not installed on factory manufactured motorcycles and raise noise emissions above EPA standards.

    Noise

    • Straight pipe exhaust systems attempt to bypass mufflers to increase the noise level of exhaust gases released from an engine, bafflers are used with straight pipe exhausts to reduce noise. Mufflers use one or all of three methods to reduce noise emissions: absorption, restriction and reflection.
