Most plastics fall under the classification of thermoplastics. Other plastics, including melamine, are thermosets. Although similar in many ways, thermoplastics can be melted down and reformed into new products. Thermosets, and thus melamine, cannot be melted in a useful way. Melamine products are permanent, which makes them ideal for furniture making.
Kitchen furniture made with melamine includes countertops, cabinets and tabletops, often in the form of Formica. Throughout the rest of the house, melamine furniture comes in the form of desks, bookshelves, dressers and headboards on beds. Melamine furniture can be made in any color and pattern desired, and is often created with a wood grain that mimics traditional furniture.
Advantages of Melamine Furniture
Melamine is a very durable material but is also lightweight and generally costs less than other furniture materials. It can withstand high temperatures, giving it an advantage over wood and other materials where hot pots and burning cigarettes are concerned. Melamine is a hard, durable material and does not chip or scratch easily.
Care of Melanine Furniture
To clean the surfaces on melamine furniture, wash with a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth. Mild dish detergent and warm water will also clean melamine. Rinse with clear water and dry the surface with a fresh soft cloth or paper towels.
