Tips on Building a Cedar Fence

Using unsuitable nails causes streaks of corrosion on board surfaces.

Popular for its affordability and natural resistance to decay and pests, cedar fence boards, rails and posts create attractive and durable fences. If improperly installed, however, a cedar fence can become an ineffective eyesore. Following fencing tips allows the builder to constructed a beautiful, lasting cedar fence.

Setting Posts

The traditional method of post setting places posts directly into a hole filled with concrete, leaving the post susceptible to contact with ground moisture and subterranean pests. To increase the life of fence posts, install posts into a post base bracket, which raise the post slightly above ground level.

Fastener Tips

Use only corrosion-resistant fasteners to attach cedar fence components. Galvanized and stainless steel fasteners are the most common corrosion-resistant fasteners for building cedar fences. Using the wrong types of nails or screws not only reduces the lifespan of the fence but causes streaks of corrosion, called "bleeding," to run down the board faces.

Weatherization

Although cedar fence components last years without surface coatings, weatherproofing improves the fence's appearance. Without waterproofing, the surface of cedar fence components will fade from a vibrant tan to a dull gray within a single season. To retain the fence's original appearance, apply annual coats of waterproofing compound.
