Different Size Wax Ring Gaskets

A leaking wax ring is a simple repair.

A wax ring is a gasket that seals the gap between a toilet base and closet flange. Although wax rings are either 3-inch or 4-inch to match the size of the sewer connection, different thicknesses and styles are available, depending on the application.

  1. Standard

    • For a basic toilet installation on a level floor, a standard wax gasket will suffice. However, when it comes to sealing toilets, a simple wax ring with just enough wax to do the job doesn't offer much peace of mind.

    Reinforced

    • A reinforced toilet gasket is a wax ring around a polyethylene sleeve. The top of the sleeve fits around the toilet trap outlet while the lower part slips inside the closet flange. When the toilet is settled in, the wax forms a seal around the sleeve, flange and toilet base. Some even have a urethane sponge embedded in the wax for extra protection on uneven floors. For most installations, a reinforced wax ring is all that's required.

    Heavy Duty

    • Called heavy duty, extra-thick or jumbo, the main feature of this variety of reinforced toilet flange gasket is extra wax. Used mainly on very uneven floors, sunken closet flanges or problem installations, a heavy duty wax ring is often more wax than necessary for most toilets.
