The Process of Manufacturing a Door

Doors are manufactured from a variety of materials, including solid and engineered wood, steel and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In the case of wood, the first step in the manufacturing process is to remove the bark from logs, cut them to size and dry them in a kiln.

  1. Hollow Core

    • A typical hollow core wooden door consists of a particleboard core, two outer door skins, precut rail and stile components and adhesive. The components are coated with polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesive and the door is rolled in a press for at least an hour.

    Reinforced

    • If the door needs to be reinforced, epoxy resin and fiberglass mats may be applied to the areas surrounding the doorknob and hinges. After the dried wood is cut to size, it is passed through a machine that sprays epoxy resin onto the required areas.

    Steel

    • The raw material for steel doors is rolled sheets of galvanized or zinc-coated steel. These are cut and formed in various shapes and sizes and welded together to form the door.
