Morning glory is a fast-growing vine that can easily climb a trellis or fence by twining itself around the support. The funnel-like flowers open in the morning and close again by afternoon. Though they are most commonly planted outside, with some minor adaptations they can flourish indoors. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Planting

    • Morning glory seeds have very thick coats. Soak the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water before planting to make germination easier. Seeds should be planted 1/4 inch deep in a pot of soil. Morning glory rarely survives transplantation, so choose a pot that is large enough to accommodate the plant as it matures.

    Sunlight

    • Morning glory prefers full sun, so be sure to provide plenty of light. This can be done by placing the plant in a sunny window, or through use of an artificial light. It also needs moist, warm soil (approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit) to thrive; water frequently and keep the room temperature stable.

    Support

    • Potted morning glory

Morning glory is an expert at climbing. Provide a strong support and train the vines by gently wrapping the new growth around it. If no support is provided, morning glory will vine over everything in its path.

    Warning

    • Morning glory seeds contain lysergic acid amide, a hallucinogen similar to LSD, and can cause serious illness if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Contact the local poison control center immediately if swallowed.
