Clean mattress foam toppers and covers ward off bed bugs, mold and allergens.

Let's face it, no matter how clean you keep a home, a mattress foam topper and cover become musty, dusty and icky over time -- a perfect breeding ground for bed bugs, mold and allergens. However, there are a few simple steps to combine for the most effective cleaning of foam mattress toppers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shake It

    • Sprinkle your cover with baking soda, wait 5 minutes, then vacuum your foam topper cover to freshen it from time to time. However, remove the cover if it unzips and take both the cover and foam outside to shake for a good airing-out and thorough dust removal. Hang them over a deck railing and whack the cover and topper with a broom handle to remove even more dust particles.

    Wash It

    • If the cover unzips, remove it from the topper, zip it closed and wash in hot water with standard amounts of laundry soap, color-safe bleach (to kill bacteria) and 2 tbsp. of baking soda for odor removal. Check the label of your cover for washing instructions particular to that brand. Dry the cover in a hot dryer or hang it over a shower curtain rod or balcony railing to air-dry. A hot dryer kills bugs, but may shrink the cover; read the label for drying instructions.

    Wipe It

    • If you cannot remove the topper cover, or you want to wipe down the foam insert, fill a 1-gallon bucket with warm water and add 1 tbsp. of laundry soap, 1 tsp. of baking soda, and a 1/8 cup of color-safe bleach, if the label allows. Soak a rag in the soapy solution, wring it out well, and wipe down the cover or foam on both sides. Pat dry with a bath towel and hang the foam topper over a shower curtain rod or balcony railing to dry completely.

    Heat It

    • The suns' heat naturally kills fungus and mold. On a hot day, lay your cover and foam topper outside in a clean place, such as over a clean picnic table or railing. Allow full sun to hit each side of the mattress and cover for several hours.
