The corn kernel has two parts: the germ and the endosperm. The germ is the new plant while the endosperm is the material used to feed it as it emerges.
Function

The germ and the endosperm are separated once the corn is mature. The germ is pressed and turned into corn oil while the endosperm is dried and then ground up to create corn flour.

Farmers who grow organic corn will add organic compost from plant waste or composted manure to the soil for additional nutrients.
