Why Does My CO2 Tank Leak?

Why Does My CO2 Tank Leak? thumbnail
CO2 is needed to give bubbly life to beer.

Drinks as varied as sodas and beer need an influx of CO2 to create the bubbly satisfaction that is part of the beverages' appeal. But if the CO2 tank is leaking, the resulting drinks suffer from being too flat.

  1. Identification

    • A CO2, or carbon dioxide, tank holds compressed gas that is slowly emitted through connected tubing. This tubing is for connection with syrup bags for sodas or beer containers, such as kegs.

    Considerations

    • A common CO2 tank leak is caused by an empty syrup receptacle still attached. The CO2 tank remains in full pumping action as if the syrup is still full and providing sodas. In addition, the pressure regulator should be checked on the tank to verify that it is allowing enough gas out, but not an excessive amount. A normal supply gauge pressure should be higher than 90 pounds per square inch.

    Expert Insight

    • According to NuCO2 Beverage Carbonation, cleaning the fitting between the soda syrup container and the CO2 tank can alleviate any leaks when the syrup supply is exhausted. This removal of the syrup accumulation in the fitting helps the check valve function to stop leaks.
