Climate Control Problems in a Dodge Caravan

The Dodge Caravan, a family minivan available with four-wheel drive, was introduced in 1983. Although, according to Edmunds.com, the Grand Caravan is a best-selling minivan, it is not exempt from mechanical issues. In particular, 1995 through 2000 models have had multiple AC compressor problems.

  1. AC Compressor

    • Dodge technical service bulletins indicate that the Caravan's main climate control issue is a faulty AC compressor, which is mounted on the vehicle's engine. TSBs indicate that the Caravan's AC compressor may fail due to "cracking" at or near the compressor.

    Symptoms

    • TSBs report that "moaning and groaning" noises are common in relation to a failing AC compressor. Additionally, you may experience a "bump feeling" when the AC compressor engages. In some cases the AC compressor may "lock up" and fail entirely.

    Solution

    • Auto MD estimates the cost of a new AC compressor for a base model Caravan at $610 for parts and labor. It is important to replace a failing AC compressor in a timely manner because if left unattended it may damage other components of the Caravan's AC system.
