Homemade Camper Trailer That Sleeps Four
Whether building a simple pop-up or a full-size camper, the base you use for your homemade camper trailer determines the materials and level of effort required to build it. The options are: a large van, pickup truck, flatbed truck or trailer frame.
-
Large Van
-
Building a camper using a van is convenient because the shell is already complete. To sleep four, begin with a large van and build two sets of bunk beds with hinged top bunks. Fold these down to form couch backs, providing sleeping and sitting space. Then, add ventilation, cooking and storage.
Pickup Truck
-
To make a camper that sleeps four in a pickup truck bed, build two plywood boxes that slide over each other and open up. Hinged sides unfold to provide bunks and jacks raise or lower the upper section.
-
Flatbed Truck or Trailer Frame
-
A similar process is used to build a camper on flatbed trucks and trailer frames. With either, build a frame, such as a house with doors and windows, and secure it to the truck bed or trailer. Shell the outside with lightweight waterproof material, install wiring, plumbing, insulation, ceiling ventilation and fixtures, finish inner walls, and then build any cabinets and furniture, such as bunk beds.
