Chevy Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
The power steering system on a Chevrolet uses hydraulic fluid under pressure. The pump which powers the system has a pulley driven by a belt which is turned by the engine. The belt runs around a pulley. Sometimes the pulley has to be removed. You'll need a special tool
-
Jackstands
-
The car has to be put on jack stands in case the pulley and pump have to be serviced from underneath.
Pulley Connections
-
The pulley attaches to the pump with a single nut in the center. The nut can be removed with a socket set and a wrench. The belt can then be taken off.
-
Specialized Tool
-
There's a special tool called a pulley puller. The tool isn't used very often, even by full-time mechanics. It can be rented from rental centers. It's placed around the base of the pulley and centered on the hole in the middle of the pulley.
How the Puller Works
-
The pulley puller puts pressure on the center of the pump, where it fits inside the pulley, while lifting around the outside edge of the pulley. The puller will pull the pulley off the pump.
