Does the PBX Go Before or After the Router?
In order to link the phone lines and a fax machine of an office, a machine running PBX software or a PBX server is added to the router. This allows the user more options for remote phone system diagnostics.

Router
-
The router is the trunk of the data stream, separating the incoming signal to each phone line and PBX. In essence, the router is what assigns a specific address to each device. Without the router, information would simply be delivered to every device on the system.
PBX
-
PBX is software that tells the system how to work together. For example, PBX assigns an extension to each line and uses the router's assigned addresses to connect to the needed line (extension). This information is best handled after the signals are already separated by the router, therefore the router must go first.

Phone System
-
Each of the phones in the system will connect to the router using RJ45 network cable. A computer can be used as a phone as well, with the correct software and headset. This will also allow you to retrieve voice mail from any of the attached phone lines and play them over the speakers of the computer or by dialing into the system.
