  1. Rotting

    • Since composite decking contains between 50 to 70 percent wood, according to Ask The Builder, there is a possibility of the wood content of the decking rotting. To avoid potential wood rot, use only decking that has been treated with a preservative, such as zinc borate.

    Fading

    • Exposure to the sun, heat, rain and snow can fade composite decking. Composite decking is also susceptible to scratching. Unlike real wood, composite decking may not be sanded, stained or refinished once it becomes discolored.

    Mold

    • Materials used in composite decking can foster mold growth that must be removed with a cleaner containing sodium hypochlorite. Since it can be difficult to remove, multiple applications may be required with a stiff bristled brush.
