What Is a Kreg Screw?
A Kreg screw is a fastener designed for use with the Kreg Jig, a pocket-joinery tool that helps you build face frames for cabinetry and other woodworking projects that require tight joints between pieces of wood. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Head
-
All Kreg screws are square-drive screws. Rather than having a slot for a standard screwdriver or an X-shaped indentation for a Phillips driver, the head of each screw has a deep, square socket. Also called Robertson-head screws, square-drive screws resist "cam-out," which occurs when the driver head slips out of the screw.
Shank
-
The threads on a Kreg screw go only halfway up the shank of the screw, rather than all the way to the head. Kreg says this design ensures that the pieces of wood being fastened pull tightly together when screwed.

Tip
-
Kreg screws are self-tapping, meaning that the screw drills its own hole as it turns, rather than simply pushing through the wood, which can cause wood to split. With a self-tapping screw, a pilot hole usually isn't necessary.
