Air motors are often used in printing presses.

An air, or pneumatic, motor is different than a traditional electric motor. Rather than using electricity, air rotates the pistons in the motor, creating mechanical power. The cost of a motor depends on its size, material and power.

  1. Concept

    • An air motor is connected to an air compressor that pushes air into the motor, causing the coil to rotate and create the mechanical power. While the motor is not run on electricity, the air compressor has a separate -- often electrical -- power source.

    Benefits

    • An air motor is about one-third of the size of a traditional motor and one-fifth its weight. This makes it an optimum choice for close quarters or where a smaller motor is needed such as construction sites. The air compressor that powers the motor is often much larger than the motor itself.

    Cost

    • Air motors vary in cost based on the type of material it is made of, size and power needed. As of March 2011, an average motor offering up to 1,000 revolutions per minute can cost upward of $600 and in extreme cases several thousand dollars for larger specialized applications such as mining.
